Salutations Milwaukee Area Professionals!

Today is a new opportunity to live the dream of our ancestors.  I am overjoyed to take up the mantle of President of the Milwaukee Area Professionals (MAP) chapter of the National Society of Black Engineers (NSBE).  NSBE has been near and dear to my heart since I first stepped foot on the campus of the University of Wisconsin- Madison the fall of 2004.  I feel honored to stand on the shoulder of our prior leadership, President Emeritus Mitchelle Lyle, who shepherded our chapter through the worst of the COVID-19 pandemic.  The hard work of the 2020-2021 board has put the chapter in prime position to continue community outreach as the world continues down the path of the new normal.

I believe it is my charge to further the mission of NSBE, “ to increase the number of culturally responsible black engineers that excel academically, succeed professionally, and positively impact the community”, in the Milwaukee Area!  We will achieve that as a chapter with this year’s motto “Build THE Pipeline!”  Building the pipeline is about pumping resources into community engagement to flood our middle school to professional STEM pipeline.  I am so proud of the ongoing partnership with Beyond STEM that nurtures the curious minds of middle school students across an array of engineer disciplines.  Our Professionals Partnering In the Classroom (PPIC), provides high school students with additional perspectives and exposure to success and the paths to attain it.  Signature events like INSPIRE exposes graduating seniors to industry leaders that are looking for local talent and aids the scholarships MAP grants to high school students pursuing STEM.  The 3 local collegiate NSBE chapters at Marquette, MSOE, and UW-Milwaukee that foster a collaborative community where students can learn and excel together as they race towards graduation.  MAP curates experiences at every level to identify potential and foster connections to retain homegrown talent.

Milwaukee is the place that I love and call home.  The city has given so much to me personally and I believe MAP is uniquely positioned as an important black voice as the city pursues being a Tech Hub.  Our membership exudes entrepreneurial spirit and is a hotbed for ideas, tech skills, and collaboration. This community of black engineers provides a landing pad for transplants to the city to provide a personal touch for newcomers.  Ultimately most of us have roots in the city and understand what retaining black talent is about.  We continue to be a resource to our professional partnerships and are excited to forge new bounds throughout the city and region.
